Writing:  This week the students will write their first personal narrative as a beginning of year assessment.  I will show you this assessment and we will discuss your child’s writing in our Fall conference.  After the writing is complete, the students will identify nouns (common/proper and singular/plural) and verbs in their personal narrative.  We will introduce our first spelling/vocabulary words for the week.  The students will define the words at school and for homework they will write a sentence using each word with the correct meaning of the word defined in class.  The words will be introduced on Mondays and the spelling/vocab. test will be given on Fridays.  For this week our spelling/vocab. words are included in our reading story from our Journey’s textbook.

Reading:  We will read “A Fine, Fine School” and I will model/guide. The students will practice the expecatations for our class reading time on how to answer comprehension questions, note the page number where we located the answers, and finally how to write our answers using complete sentences.  I will also introduce our Reader’s Response Notebooks and the expectations for recording our answers.  For the beginning of the year, a yellow packet will go home with comprehension questions to answer for the story we are reading for that week.  These packets are due back to school on Friday and will count as a homework grade.  In addition to the weekly story, an individual book related to the theme will be assigned to your child based on his/her reading level.  We will work with partners and guidance this week so the children have a good understanding of this reading time before we do individual work.

Science:  In class we will finish setting up our science notebooks and begin with studying famous scientists and their contributions and make a timeline.  Next we will discuss/experiment with different tools scientists use and sort the tools into groups.  On Friday we will have a short assessment on the tools.

Math:  Our focus this week in math is multiplication of 10’s and 5’s.  We will review/learn various ways we can solve multiplication such as array models, number lines, repeated addition, strip diagrams, etc.  All concepts in math taught will also be practiced in word problem scenarios so children have the experience for problem solving for tests.   I will also introduce them to spiral reviews as math warm-ups for reinforcing concepts previously taught so they don’t forget the skills.  This unit will continue to the middle of next week and a test will be given next week mid-week.

As you can see, we will be busy each minute of our day.  The beginning of the year is always the hardest because we are learning all the new expectations for 3rd grade.  I truly believe each child has the ability to do all the things expected and I appreciate your support in helping them fulfill these expectations.  One of the biggest adjustments is learning to work quietly and more independently.  Providing a loving and supportive environment is very important to me.  I give lots of praise and incentives for good behavior/study habits.  If I can help you in any way, please contact me!

Hadden's Happenings

Welcome to my classroom and to third grade!

I enjoyed meeting all my families during supply drop off and ice cream social.  Thank you to our wonderful PTA for providing such an important and fun evening for our families!

My blog will be updated weekly to reflect our learning skills and upcoming events for our classroom and our school.  I do not always update school events, I ask that you check our Kathy Caraway website for school related events.

The first week of school we are getting to know each other and will be working on building our classroom community.

Writing- We will be completing some "Getting to Know Me" assignments and setting goals for third grade.  We will also fill in a graphic organizer on "How I Spent My Summer Vacation" filled with snapshot pictures.   This activity will extend into next week when we complete our first big writing assignment.

Reading- We will read "Each Kindness" book and make our social contract for the classroom.  We will focus on how we want to be treated by each other and how they want me to treat them.  How they think I want to be treated and finally how we want to treat each other when there is a conflict.  We will read "Spaghetti in a Hot Dog" and do a classmates connection activity with making a Venn Diagram and discovering how we are the same and different.  We will do an activity on making mistakes and learn that we aren't perfect and making mistakes is OK and helps us grow as learners.  We will also read "The Important Book" and make a class book.  We will also take a reading assessment to help me get to know your child better as a reader.

Science/S.S.- We will read "Fantastic Elastic Brain" and have a discussion on how learning helps us to stretch our brain and tie that into perseverance and determination.  We will set up our science notebooks and the students will brainstorm why science is important and what is a scientist?  We will go over our safety science contract and end the week with a fun M&M Science experiment.

Math - We will read "Math Curse" and discuss where do we see math in our real world?  We will review second grade skills with math centers and take a math pretest to let me know how your child thinks as a mathematician.  During our math time we will do a "Save Fred" activity where the children will learn to work with others to complete an assignment they can't do on their own.

This week I will introduce the "Me Museum" assignment to be completed at home.  Please look in the Tuesday folder for more information on this assignment.  I will send out a picture for an example in an email with a due date after I explain to the students how to complete the activity.

I'm looking forward to a great year with your child.  If you have any questions, please contact me at 512-464-5559 or email me at Rachel_hadden@roundrockisd.org
