Language Arts

Writing

  • We will start our Poetry Unit
  • This week we will focus on writing acrostic, diamante and concrete poetry.
  • Spelling Vocabulary Words: theme, tone, imagery, speaker and mood. Words and definitions will be sent home on Mondays. Students need to complete their sentences at home. They will keep this paper at home to use as a study sheet for learning the spelling and meaning of each word, as well as how to use it in a sentence correctly.

Reading
  • This week we will learn about different poetic structures, how to analyze poetry, identify figurative language and read different poems in class.
  • Reading and responding to leveled readers for independent/reading groups.
  • The Harvest Birds selection from the Journey's Book. We will not be using our Journey’s book in class due to our poetry unit.  The ready selection will be assigned as homework on Tuesday and students will have until Friday to complete the questions and turn in the yellow comprehension packet. Parents, please be sure to continue to check over your child's work and sign the cover page, especially since we aren’t using the story in class. 

Science
  • Properties and State of Matter
  • Begin Changing States of Matter



Math

  • Complete unit 4 on place value 
  • Ordering and comparing numbers
  • Find 4 digit numbers on a number line
  • Numbers to 9,999 problem solving
  • Unit test on Thursday or Friday

For the week of: October 5th - 9th 

Class Reminders: 
Specials: Art and PE
Please send a snack daily for your child
Thursday: Library Day
Friday: Yellow comprehension books and spelling/voc definitions and sentences due for homework

Writing:
·         Spelling/Voc words: collect, ragged, scrambled, rapidly, continued, sorted, darted, orders
·          
·         Continue writing our personal narrative
·                     Lesson on avoiding “it” monster
·                     Using strong verbs
·                     Adding dialogue to our writing
·                     If time, work on revising and editing

Reading:
·                      Read Max’s Words  from our Journey’s book
·                     Reading Strategy: Sequencing
·                     Reading and responding to leveled readers
·                     All BAS testing is completed! J Results will be shared during our fall conference

The yellow packet will go home with comprehension questions to answer for the story we are reading. These packets are due back to school on Friday and will count as a homework grade. Parents, please be sure to check over your child's work and sign the cover page.  In addition to the weekly story, an individual book related to the theme will be assigned to your child, in class, based on his/her reading level.  

Social Studies:
·                     Finish our unit of citizenship
·                     The students did a great job on historical research on the computers.  Please look for the print out in the Tuesday folders. 
·                     Reflection on what citizenship means to me using our new adopted consumable workbooks.
·                     Test on this unit at the end of the week.


Math: 
·                     We completed  our rounding/estimating (place value) unit.
·                     Unit test will be in Tuesday folder.
·                     Begin unit on multiplication: Focus on 2’s and 4’s in this unit

·                     Different strategies will be taught for multiplying by 2’s and 4’s
