For the week of November 2nd – 5th

Language Arts:
Writing Workshop: We will be completing and publishing our final poetry to get ready for our poetry café.  The students will be making invitations for you, but if you want to save the date, our poetry café will take place on November 20th at 8:00am.  We hope you can attend.  The children have worked very hard on writing and memorizing a poem for this special day.  After our poetry unit is complete, we will begin writing lessons on expository writing, beginning with “What qualities do you see in expositiory writing?” and “how to create an interest list of topics that you have an interest in.”

Our third grade team has decided to "go back to the basics" for spelling right now.  Our spelling list will consist of commonly misspelled words that students use in their writing almost everyday.  For now, there won't be vocabulary words.  The children will choose 7 words to be used in complete sentences for homework.   Your child will be held accountable for spelling these words in everyday writing from now on.  I'm hopeful this will help with spelling in our classroom.

Reading Workshop: We are completing our unit on poetry reading and learning how to read poetry and answer comprehension questions.  After we finish, we will begin our next unit on “Non-fiction”.  We will learn the characteristics of non-fiction, learn about Author’s purpose and explore non-fiction features.

Science: This week we will focus on changing states of matter and do a fun experiment on how heating causes matter to change state and finally learn about mixtures.  For our mixtures lesson, I will be sending out a sign-up genius to bring different edible things for this experiment.  If you are able, please sign up to bring something.  The students will be able to eat their experiment for snack if they would like. J  Watch for the sign up to be sent out later this week.  We will do the experiment next Monday.

Math: Now that we have reviewed time to the minute and tackled the hard concept of elapsed time, we are now ready to move into perimeter.  Our lessons will be on “exploring the perimeter of irregular polygons”.  This will extend into next week and we will take our unit test in the beginning of next week.  I encourage you to use ixl to review time, especially the elapsed time section.
